See http://openjdk.java.net/install/. On Ubuntu, I can use

sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jdk

java Example   # run bytecode in Java Virtual Machine

javac start/HelloWorldSwing.java # Or javac HelloWorldSwing.java if we are in start directory
